Climate change is not just a distant concern—it's a pressing reality right here in Marin County, CA, affecting the safety of our homes, the food we eat, our health, and the neighborhoods we cherish. Each year, we witness more dramatic climate shifts that threaten our way of life and our planet's future. Rising temperatures are fueling more frequent and intense droughts and wildfires, putting our diverse habitats like redwood forests and Baylands at risk. These areas are not just beautiful landscapes; they are essential for preserving biodiversity and storing carbon.
Looming sea level rise poses an immediate threat to low-lying neighborhoods, especially Marin City and the Canal neighborhood in San Rafael—one of the most impacted communities in the Bay Area. Here, priority communities are confronting heightened risks of flooding and coastal erosion due to rising tides. These climate impacts compound existing socioeconomic vulnerabilities, including limited access to resources and infrastructure.
In response, urgent action is needed in Marin County to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, prepare for climate impacts, and safeguard our natural habitats. It is imperative that our efforts prioritize communities like Marin City, the Canal neighborhood, and others, ensuring equitable resilience strategies are implemented to address these complex challenges head-on. Our future depends on proactive and inclusive measures to protect all residents from the profound impacts of climate change.

MarinCAN is a county-wide public-private partnership committed to coordinating and accelerating Marin’s response to the climate crisis while fostering a just, equitable, and climate-resilient future. We grew out of a community-wide effort involving 150 volunteers and dozens of organizations focused on identifying scalable Climate Solutions to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, prepare for climate impacts, and assure climate justice.
We believe that the climate emergency demands comprehensive and collaborative action across Marin, to accelerate greenhouse gas reductions and climate preparations, and to enhance and expand social equity as our community responds to the crisis. There are many important efforts already underway in Marin. However, these efforts have often been piecemeal, unaligned, under-resourced, little known, and insufficiently supported by public policy. Coordination and alignment of these efforts is critical to achieve meaningful results in the limited time we have and to assure that climate justice is central to all our efforts.
Central to MarinCAN's mission, we will drive a coherent and equitable community-wide response to the climate crisis. From its beginning the organization has been focused on mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, preparing for climate impacts, and cultivating deep democracy through community-wide engagement that is inclusive of frontline
communities. Our ambitious but achievable goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Marin by 60% by 2030 and below zero by 2045, while achieving a just, equitable, and climate-resilient future.
